The image that money creates

The depiction of wealth now days is in fact very similar to what berger says in episode #3 of ways of seeing, in the episode berger talks about how wealthy people used oil paintings to portray their wealth and the power that came with it, often to create an image of themselves to the public as a high class individual or individuals and sometimes even an entire family, just like nowadays wealth back in the oil painting Era is synonym of what and how much you can afford to buy, how many properties, jewelry and cars(horses and cows back then) you could own. Now days the same method is used but through pictures and social media as the image above shows Floyd Mayweather a famous boxer who is considered very wealthy and successful, as we can see in the picture Floyd is flashing some of his valued items like his jewelry and his money creating an image and/or feeling of wealth.

The oil painting of the lady laying on top of her jewelry could be very much compared to the picture of Floyd Mayweather as they are both intended to create some sort of feeling of wealth and power to the viewer.

Rich Kids Of The Internet

What’s the best way to illustrate wealth in modern society ? Social Media! For the past couple of years Instagram has been a huge hit for users to upload photos of their lives and show off what they have. Heard of rich kids on the internet?! Well it’s an account created by rich kids worldwide to post images of their lavish lifestyles. Below you”ll see an image from this account. This is a women wearing designer head to toe while she shops and moves around in her private jet! As she captions her picture “Taking jets like people take Ubers”. Here she is  showing off her wealth and power because this is something not many people can do. Even if this image didn’t have a caption everything about represents money/wealth. Just as the oil paintings that Berger was discussing about. Both this image and the oil paintings demonstrates what money can buy. Although this image can’t be hanged on a wall it can be posted to the world on social media to show. Berger states “Every portrait is a record which says,” I once existed and looked like this.”Just like in this imagine her goal was to represent what Berger stated by taking the photo and posting it. The difference is that the meaning to this  image can change over time  and the meaning of the oil paintings as Berger states is something that would remain sacred.

Comfortable zone

Gucci - Top Most Expensive Fashion Brands On The Face Of the Earth

Berger argue that oil paintings egress to depict the owner wealth. This picture shows the Gucci leather bag which is very expensive to own and clearly show its classiness. This look like other normal bags that people can afford but when you add a brand name with this the price go high. Brand become a tag which show high class. This is similar to the European oil paintings because in episode 3 of ways of seeing rich people wore expensive clothes and jewelry. These clothes and jewelry are so expensive that nobody could afford it except rich people. In addition, the record of oil paintings represent the confidence of power and worthiness and luxury things represent wealth. No matter how many periods has past but the difference of rich and poor people are always there. People should get those things in which they feel comfortable, not for showing off. People spend dollars on it because It boosts their status. Brands doesn’t make you look good toward others, your personality and behavior makes you a good person. This is different because in someway it shows the wealth of people but sometimes taking care of yourself makes you feel good and that motivates you to do better and earn more money so you can buy whatever you want.

Should You Buy the Designer Handbag?

Tiffany Haddish has said she doesn’t want to own a handbag that’s more expensive than the money she can put in it. Do you agree?

Art is freedom

Berger discusses oil painting in episode 3 ways of seeing , in which he says buying painting also buys the looks of painting. From ancient time value of painting are mysterious ,they placed at different places which becomes popular and unique . Because of popularity of paintings art gallery looks like palace and needs to be cautions. This particular image was painted in 1533 by Holbein Shows two french diplomat in London .This picture illustrate wealth of these two men in which one man dressed up well in huge fur coat ,his jewelers , where as other man he has different look but they both appeared wealthy in this painting , but every culture is uniquely complex and it shows to make a statement on other cultures in opposition . However Berger demonstrate in episode 2 is same as this painting , in which how wealthy it shows through  embroiderers , furies , jewelers , carpet work and leathers . if we viewed in different it has another way of meaning . where i can say they are preparing for a war in which they appears in unique look . There culture are advancement to the rest of the world.

The invention of camera dates back to 1816, popularity of instant camera took off in 1965 and till date it is taking the world by storm. Today, almost everyone has camera on theirs phone all the time and is using its features to the max. Millennials are expected to take 25,000 selfies in their lifetime. With new invention comes new changes, new manipulation which tends  misuses the invention for their own benefit. These days people are using images for everything, for example, political campaigns, clothing lines, Ads, protest etc because images has the capacity and the platform to reach millions of people around the world with the help of the internet. So images can manipulate a lot of things in anyone’s life and it’s free. Recently, I was on “TikTok” which is like “ Vines”, where they act with some music in background and sometimes notes on the pictures. So there was a trend recently on the app “ Tik Tok” where people put black paint on their face with sad music in the background. The next second, it changes to fun music , the same person is shown with full makeup and of course without the black paint. This context with few images switching from black paint fact to full glowing makeup shows how the world sees fair skin as more attractive and how melanin is not considered beautiful. This trend showcased bad society’s mentality where if you don’t meet society’s standard of beauty then you are not attractive. This trend made me feel so bad and I have seen a lot of people from India keeping up with this trend. Coming from India, I know how melanin is not considered the most attractive skin color and pale skin can win over darker skin color. Which is sad but it’s true in most rural India. It is so sad that the trend is spreading all the wrong message through the use of images and it is even more sad that this has became a trend on that app.

nudity in art

In episode 2 of “ The Ways of Seeing,” Berger talks about the difference between being naked and being nude. To be naked is to be one’s true self and to be nude is to be on display. The use of nudity in European art has brought on the idea that women must submit and please men. In many of the examples Berger gave in the second episode of “The Ways of Seeing,” he shows how the positioning an artist chose for the subject is used in pleasing the often male spectator. One example Berger shows is the 1814 painting by, Jean-Aguste-Dominique-Ingres, La Grande Odalisque. The face is in the direction towards the viewer and the gaze is meant to charm them. More often than not, this positioning and body language are used to show the ease and submissiveness of the subject to please the oftentimes male spectator.

There is a poster that uses the same woman and her positioning in the painting. The Poster was published in a portfolio in the 1980s by a group of anonymous, feminist, female artists that went by the Guerrilla Girls. The guerrilla Girls dedicated to combatting both race, sexism, and gender in the world of art. The use of nudity in this piece is to contradict and inquire about the use and representation of women in not just early European art, but all art.

YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL NO MATTER WHAT THEY SAY!

From the very beginning of civilization, women were depicted as an object of sexual pleasure for men. Berger reflects on this idea on his second episode of “The Way of Seeing.” We have observed this depiction since European oil paintings to modern day advertisement. Women have always been portrayed the way men want to see them. Their beauty depends on how men judge them. It is to be believed that a woman must have what men consider to be a perfect body in order to be “BEAUTIFUL.” It requires them to have a slim figure with pointy breasts and a skinny belly. If a woman is fat or has cellulite on her body, nobody will like her. Nowadays companies use pictures and videos of nude women in order to influence their male customers. Berger also explains how the nude European oil paintings of women were used to appeal to the male spectator. By these means, we can see that the tradition of depicting women in a way that is sexually appealing to men started a very long time ago and still exists today.

YOUR BODY IS NOT WRONG, SOCIETY IS.

WE ALL ARE BEAUTIFUL

WE ALL ARE BEAUTIFUL

STOP BULLYING!!

STOP BULLYING!!

FREE THE NIPPLE!!

In Episode #2 John Berger states, “To be naked is to be oneself. To be nude is to be seen naked by others yet not recognized as one self.”  He points out his personal opinion on how women were viewed in European paintings. He explains to us that being viewed naked was to simply be without clothes vs when you’re nude your being used as an object to men. In todays society his views are still being shown. Heard of the FREE THE NIPPLE MOVEMENT?! Well if you haven’t it’s a campaign to protest against women equality. Just as Berger says society has us women growing up with the importance on how we appear to others and in particularly to men, creating a difference in nudity between the both. Although both men and both have breast being naked in our society is a huge problem. For example a man can be naked as he goes for a jog but a women can’t be naked in public as she breastfeeds her child. As women we can’t be naked in front of men because we are viewed as sexual objects.

Blog Post #1 Remembering 9/11

                                                Remembering 9/11

I was just a little girl when 9/11 took place. I tend to have flashbacks and blur images of this day.  As I sit here and view this image I begin to feel again those feelings that took place during this day. So many people besides myself can view this image, even those who weren’t there and connect to the horrors that occurred on this day. That’s the power of the camera. It allows us to view a past moment  that took place and personally in our own perspective connect to it. We might not all have the same understanding to this image and over time its meaning changes. The meaning of this image is always going to change over time and more so to the audience viewing it. My expressions do fit what John Berger is describing in episode 1. A Image is a message with a meaning that is going to always going to be different depending where its being viewed from and who is viewing it over time.
