Paper 2

Paper 2

The main concern of Damon Krukowski’s Ways of Hearing podcast is his analysis of how digital sound has changed our interpersonal relationships and overall sense of community, and he organizes his examination of this idea around six episodes based on six keywords: “time,” “space,” “love,” “money,” “power,” and “noise.” For this assignment, you should write an essay with a thesis statement that analyzes what one of these episodes argues about the relationship between digital sound and interpersonal relationships or community formations. Your paper could take up any aspect of the listening experience that is relevant to the episode you wish to write about, so you could write about listening to music or other aspects of how digital audio affect our relationships or sense of community.

Paper requirements:

  • Your thesis should use the templates from They Say/I Say for agreeing and disagreeing simultaneously.
  •  Your thesis should also be structured around the principles we’ve discussed from “the Sheridan Baker Thesis Machine.” It should have a claim and a rationale.
  • You should use at least two quotations from the episode you analyze.
  • You should think of one example not mentioned in the podcast that illustrates your point.

Some questions you might ask yourself to get started:

  • How does a specific digital audio device shape relationships and how does Krukowski discuss this effect? How has it, according to the episode you’ve chosen, advanced or impeded possibilities for community formation?
  • What does Krukowski say about changes to the music listening experience and how these changes have affected the communities that form around music?
  • According to the episode you’ve chosen, how have personal headphones, or other wearable devices, shaped our experiences of public spaces like subways or city streets?
  • What conclusions does Krukowski draw about how digital devices have affected our experiences of one another’s voices in the episode you’ve chosen?
  • What does Krukowski argue about the buying, selling, and circulation of digital music and the communities form around these activities in the episode you’ve chosen?

These are just some of the questions that you might address, but you might find yourself addressing other aspects of the podcast episode you’ve chosen. They are only here to help you start to think about your paper.

No Headphones, No Travel

Since the time that I got my first real iPod, I never leave the house without it. I feel like I’m going nuts without my headphones in while I’m traveling in the city, particularly when I’m going on the subway. The characteristic sounds of the city that really defining the fast moving life within it have never been a novelty to me like the way a tourist might hear it. Things like the crazy local crackhead, to the roar of the trains, to the obnoxious honks of impatient taxi drivers are not something that I ever revel in. I know all these sounds already, and they are not interesting or exciting to me, they are quite the opposite. That being said, it feels like so much more of a chore to travel anywhere in the city at this point without my Apple Music, because when I have my headphones in, I create a little personal bubble for myself. This makes for a much more relaxing, peaceful environment to the one I live in. Don’t get me wrong, I love the city, and I don’t think I could ever live a quiet, boring suburban town. But I’m constantly immersed in the loud, rough and tumble of the city, that its nice to have an hour of my day consist of a more tranquil tone.

This video is montage of small clips taken in New York City with a slower pace soundtrack in the background. Notice how the dream like music adds to the true dreaminess that is New York….

Entertainment vs Reality

Television is always the main source of my procrastination. If I’m watching a series on Netflix, I will watch multiple episodes and look at the time and notice how it just vanished. Watching Netflix all day definitely doesn’t make me feel good when I reflect back, but it’s addicting. Now I have many assignments to rush through and my day is gone. A lot of these sources of entertainment distract us from the real world and cause us to rely on our devices for entertainment instead of getting our entertainment through experiences. They even distract people with little self control from their responsibilities causing them to neglect their own lives.

I don’t blame the devices themselves because we, the people produce the entertainment and encourage it. There isn’t enough emphasis on building up your own life. We see all of these celebrities on social media and tv screens and want to be like them but while you’re spending time admiring them, there’s homework left undone, a job you’re running late for and tasks you can’t complete anymore, because you spent too much time on your phone or tv this morning. It is important to know your limits and use them without forgetting about your own life and responsibilities.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Smartphones

One of all the devices that make us being distracted by the things we should be doing in everyday life is the smartphones. I believe, these devices have advantages and disadvantages in our lives. In today’s generation, smartphones are very addictive, especially for teens. Most people are spending a lot of time browsing the internet to have fun and for some reason, to make them relaxed. But somehow, it also makes us lazy. I am not going to lie, it happens to me as well, all the time. For instance, in the real world, we have planned to do our homework tomorrow, yet we are tempted to using our smartphones and realizing that the plan goes to nothing, that we wasted time. Smartphones can affect the appointments we have planned and suddenly turned into lying in bed with smartphones in our hands.

On the other side, smartphones are pretty much useful, it can make things easier for us to perform and saves us time as well. We can navigate places we want to go even though we do not know how to. We can communicate with other people that are far in our place. Also, it is our source of entertainment when in doubt or when we are stressed. That is how a smartphone can affect our lifestyle.

Kehinde Wiley

Kehinde Wiley’s image of a black man depicting Napoleon is pretty cool!

Kehinde Wiley should be viewed as a revolutionary artist in America.

Kehinde Wiley should be viewed as a revolutionary artist because his art elicits a glimpse of black and brown American culture in such an amazing and qualitative way, which empowers.

Although his art may sometimes be misunderstood and controversial, it inspires many minorities and gives them a voice to be heard.

Wiley’s image of a black man depicting Napoleon is pretty dope, but he’s recently famous for drawing a portrait of Barack Obama. Skepticism started when one of his earlier works, showed a black woman beheading a white woman which started an uproar. Certain people criticized Obama for choosing an artist that embodied racism. This infamy inspired his art to be subject to greater scrutiny and brought some people to become uneasy about what Wiley represents.
